High Frequency Word Lists
A list of high frequency words will be sent home at the beginning of each reading unit. I recommend that you have your child attempt to read each of the words on the list, and practice the ones that he/she is unable to read. It is beneficial to a child's overall reading fluency if he/she can decode these words with speed and accuracy. Thank you in advance for supporting your child's learning in first grade!

Monthly Reading Log
Each month students will be given a monthly class reading goal. Please encourage your child to read as often as possible. Remind your child to keep track of his/her reading goal on the log sheet. The log sheet will be distributed at the beginning of each month in class. Reading logs are due at the end of each month. Happy Reading!

Welcome to 1C 2016-2017!
Welcome to 1C! I hope you had a wonderful summer vacation! I am looking forward to a positive learning experience for your child this year. I will be happy to assist with your child's development throughout the school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and/or concerns. Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day. Snack milk can be purchased through the school. I will be sending home a list of supplies and our Specials Schedule on the first day of school as well as some other important information. First grade is dismissed at 3:00 p.m. by the big playground. If your child must be dismissed from a different exit or to a different individual for the day, please send in a signed note stating this change. You may contact the school office to arrange for missed school assignments and homework to be picked up at the office, or sent home with a sibling or friend. We're going to have a great year in first grade!

Homework Folders
Homework folders are sent home daily. The folder is divided into two sections: Return to School and Keep at Home. Please take a look at your child's folder each night and empty their folders so as not to miss any important news or information. Completed assignments and/or notices requiring your completion should be placed back into the folder. Thank you! Your help and support are appreciated!

How To Choose A "Just Right Book"
Practice reading at home each night. Here is how to choose a "just right book":

1. Pick an interesting book.
2. Put up one finger for each word you cannot read or understand on one page.
3. If you have put up five or more fingers, then this is not a "just right book" for you.
4. If you have less than five fingers, then you have picked a "just right book" for yourself.
Enjoy reading!
